With the slogan “Burglars don’t care where you live, but how easy it is to get in,” the Dutch government aimed to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of securing their windows and doors with proper locks. Together with co-researcher and cinematographer Adriaan van de Polder, we visited 14 cities and portrayed over a 100 people, in a diverse selection of neighborhoods within each city.

The campaign set out to demonstrate that home burglary is not limited to specific neighborhoods. Through in-depth research in each area, we curated a representative cross-section of residents who actively contribute to their communities and genuinely reflect their surroundings, while also capturing the distinctive places and everyday activities that define these neighborhoods, avoiding stereotypical outsider perspectives.

All cast members were actual inhabitants of their neighborhoods, not professional actors, which added an authentic and relatable touch to the portraits, even in their occasional awkwardness. Together with Mooi Weer Streetcasting, a vibrant palette of residents was assembled, allowing the people of each city to see themselves reflected in the project.
