De Overkant
An office clerk with low aspirations is living a moderate and happy life, until a curious sleepwalking problem emerges. While a nocturnal double life causes him to have sleepless nights, Rem’s colleagues are convinced that more ambition will bring him enlightenment, much to his chagrin. But as soon as sleep deprivation causes reality and fiction to intertwine, self-assurance about his dreamt life also starts to vanish.

De Overkant (“The Other Side”) was originally shot as a graduation project at the Utrecht School of Arts in 2012, in collaboration with cinematographer Adriaan van de Polder. Originally called ZZZ, it remained unseen for a decade. In 2023, the film was finally completed, with color correction, music, and sound design finalized under the production supervision of Bandit Amsterdam. Good things take time, don’t they?
Soundtrack
Together with musician and producer Stijn Hoes and I created the soundtrack for “De Overkant.” Using a combination of acoustic instruments and analog synthesizers we made a more contemporary version of the placeholder music, which primarily consisted of jazz.
